If you’re wondering how to disable your laptop camera, Windows 11 and Windows 10 offer several ways to do it without installing additional software. You can disable the webcam entirely, prevent apps from accessing it, or use a physical privacy switch if your laptop has one.
Most laptops come with a built-in webcam for video calls, online meetings, and recording videos. However, you may prefer to keep it turned off when you’re not using it, especially for privacy reasons. Here’s how to turn off your laptop webcam on HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and other Windows laptops.
Disable Your Laptop Camera in Windows 11
Windows 11 includes a built-in option to disable connected cameras directly from Settings.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings, then go to Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Under Connected cameras, select your built-in webcam.
- Click Disable and confirm by selecting Yes.

Your webcam will now be disabled and should appear under Disabled cameras. You may need administrator permission to make this change. If you can’t find the option or you’re using Windows 10, try the Device Manager method below.
Disable Laptop Webcam Using Device Manager
Device Manager lets you disable your laptop’s built-in webcam at the device level. This method works in both Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices) and right-click your webcam, usually listed as Integrated Camera, Integrated Webcam, or a similar name.
- Select Disable device and confirm if prompted.

If you see Enable device instead, your camera is already disabled in Device Manager. Once disabled, the webcam won’t be available to applications until you enable it again.
How to Turn Off Camera Access for Apps
If you don’t want to disable the webcam completely, you can use Windows privacy settings to prevent apps from accessing it.
On Windows 11
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn off Camera access to restrict camera access through Windows privacy controls.
- Alternatively, leave Camera access enabled and turn off Let apps access your camera or the permissions for specific apps.
- To restrict desktop programs and browsers, turn off Let desktop apps access your camera.

On Windows 10
- Open Settings > Privacy > Camera.
- Under Allow access to the camera on this device, select Change and turn off access if you want to restrict camera use at the device level.
- Alternatively, turn off Allow apps to access your camera or disable access for individual apps.
- To restrict desktop programs, turn off Allow desktop apps to access your camera.
Keep in mind that blocking camera access is not the same as disabling the webcam hardware. Some desktop applications and Windows features may behave differently, so use Device Manager or a physical privacy shutter if you want a more direct way to disable or block the camera.
Turn Off Laptop Camera Using a Privacy Shutter or Keyboard Key
Some HP, Lenovo, Dell, and other laptops include physical or electronic privacy controls that let you turn off or block the webcam without changing Windows settings. Depending on your laptop, check the following:
- Privacy shutter: Slide the built-in cover over the camera lens to physically block the image.
- Camera privacy key: Look for a keyboard key with a camera icon. Press it to toggle the webcam off. Some models require the Fn key.
- Privacy switch: Certain laptops have a dedicated switch on the side or near the camera that disables or blocks it.

These controls vary by manufacturer and model. A privacy shutter blocks the camera’s view but doesn’t necessarily disable the device in Windows.
How to Turn Your Laptop Camera Back On
Now that you know how to disable your laptop camera, you can turn it back on whenever you need it. Simply reverse the method you used:
- Windows 11 Settings: Open Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and click Enable under Disabled cameras.
- Device Manager: Right-click the disabled webcam and select Enable device.
- Privacy settings: Turn camera access back on for Windows and the applications you want to use.
- Physical controls: Open the privacy shutter or use the camera privacy key or switch to restore access.

Keep Your Laptop Webcam Under Control
Disabling your laptop camera is a simple way to control when applications can use your webcam. If you want to turn it off completely, use Windows Settings or Device Manager. If you only want to limit access, adjust the privacy permissions instead.
For additional privacy, use your laptop’s built-in camera shutter whenever it’s available.
