Most laptops come with a built-in webcam that you can use for video calls, online meetings, taking photos, or recording videos. However, if you’ve never used it before or your webcam has been disabled, you might be wondering how to turn on your laptop camera.
The good news is that Windows 11 and Windows 10 make it easy to open and use your camera without installing additional software. If the camera isn’t working, you may simply need to enable the device, adjust its privacy settings, or check a physical switch.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to activate your laptop camera, whether you’re using an HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, or another Windows laptop.
How to Open the Camera on Your Laptop
The quickest way to turn on your laptop webcam is to open the built-in Windows Camera app.
- Press the Windows key and type Camera.
- Select the Camera app from the search results.
- Allow camera access if prompted.

Your webcam should turn on and display a live preview. If the camera doesn’t work or an error appears, try the following methods.
How to Enable Your Laptop Camera in Windows 11
Windows 11 includes a dedicated section where you can manage connected cameras and re-enable devices that have been disabled.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings, select Bluetooth & devices from the left sidebar and click Cameras.
- Look for the Disabled cameras section.
- If your webcam appears there, select it and click Enable to turn the camera back on.

You may need administrator permission to enable the camera.
If you don’t see the Disabled cameras section, Windows hasn’t listed any cameras as disabled through this settings page. Your webcam may already be enabled, or it may have been disabled another way. In that case, try Device Manager.
How to Enable Your Laptop Camera Using Device Manager
Device Manager allows you to enable or disable hardware connected to your computer, including your built-in webcam. This method works in both Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices) and right-click your webcam, usually listed as Integrated Camera or a similar name.
- Select Enable device, then open the Camera app to test it.

You can also open Device Manager using Command Prompt. See our guide on how to open Windows tools from CMD for the command and other useful shortcuts.
If you see Disable device instead, your camera is already enabled. If the webcam isn’t listed, check whether your laptop has a physical camera privacy switch or key.
How to Allow Apps to Access Your Laptop Camera
Sometimes your laptop webcam is enabled, but Windows privacy settings prevent applications from using it. To fix this, you need to allow camera access.
On Windows 11
- Open Settings using Windows + I, go to Privacy & security > Camera.
- Make sure Camera access is turned on.
- Enable Let apps access your camera.
- If you’re using a browser or a desktop application such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams, enable Let desktop apps access your camera.

You can also choose which supported Microsoft Store apps are allowed to use your webcam.
On Windows 10
- Open Settings > Privacy > Camera.
- Under Allow access to the camera on this device, click Change if necessary and turn camera access on.
- Enable Allow apps to access your camera.
- Turn on camera access for the apps you want to use.
- Enable Allow desktop apps to access your camera if needed.
Remember that enabling camera access in Windows doesn’t automatically grant permission to every website. When using your webcam in a browser, you may also need to allow camera access for that specific website.
How to Turn On the Camera on an HP Laptop
Most HP laptops use the Windows Camera app, but some models include additional privacy controls that can disable the webcam. Before changing Windows settings, check the following:
- Privacy shutter: If your laptop has a sliding cover, make sure the camera lens is uncovered.
- Camera privacy key: Look for a key with a camera icon and press it to enable the webcam. Some models require the Fn key.
- Camera indicator: On certain HP laptops, an illuminated privacy key indicates that the camera is disabled.
Once you’ve checked these controls, open the Camera app to test your webcam. If it still doesn’t work, try the Windows Settings or Device Manager methods described above.
Similar privacy controls may also be available on laptops from other manufacturers.
Your Laptop Camera Is Ready to Use
Once your webcam is enabled and camera permissions are configured, you can use it with the Windows Camera app or your preferred video calling software.
If your camera still doesn’t work, restart your laptop and check for driver updates through Device Manager or Windows Update.
For better privacy, you can also disable your laptop camera in Windows 11 and 10 whenever you’re not using it.
