How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Contacts on Android and iPhone

Accidentally deleted a WhatsApp contact? Learn how to recover lost or missing contacts on Android and iPhone, even without a backup.

Recover Deleted WhatsApp Contacts on Android and iPhone

If you need to recover deleted WhatsApp contacts, the first step is to find out whether the numbers were actually deleted or simply disappeared from the app. Sometimes, your contacts are still saved on your phone, but WhatsApp can’t display them because of permission or syncing issues.

If you accidentally deleted a contact, you may be able to restore it using Google Contacts on Android or iCloud on iPhone. There are also ways to find lost WhatsApp numbers without restoring a backup.

Did you delete a WhatsApp chat instead of a contact? Deleting a conversation doesn’t automatically remove the contact from WhatsApp or your phone. Open WhatsApp, tap New Chat, and search for the person’s name or number. If the contact is still saved, you can start a new conversation.

1. WhatsApp Contacts Disappeared? Check These Settings

If WhatsApp shows phone numbers instead of contact names, first check whether those contacts are still saved in your phone’s address book. If they are, WhatsApp may not have permission to access them.

On Android

Step 1. Open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions.
Step 2. Select Contacts and choose Allow.
Step 3. Return to WhatsApp and check whether your contact names appear again.

2. How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Contacts on Android

If you accidentally deleted a contact saved to your Google Account, you can recover it from Google Contacts Trash within 30 days of deletion.

Here’s how:

Step 1. Open the Google Contacts app on your Android phone and select the Google Account where the contact was saved.
Step 2. At the bottom, tap Organize > Trash.
Step 3. Select the deleted contact and tap Recover.

Once restored, the contact should reappear in WhatsApp after syncing, provided the app has permission to access it.

What If the Contact Isn’t in Trash?

You can also try Google Contacts > Profile picture > Contacts settings > Undo changes. Choose a time before the contact was deleted, within the past 30 days, and confirm.

Important: Undoing changes affects your contact list, not just one number. Consider exporting your current contacts first. This feature also cannot recover contacts permanently deleted from Trash.

3. How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Contacts on iPhone

If you accidentally deleted a contact from your iPhone, you may be able to recover it by restoring an earlier version of your contacts from iCloud, provided an archived version is available.

Here’s how:

Step 1. On a computer or tablet, visit iCloud.com/contacts and sign in to your Apple Account.
Step 2. Open App Launcher > Data Recovery > Restore Contacts.
Step 3. Choose a version saved before the contact was deleted and click Restore.

Once the restoration is complete, your contacts should sync with your iPhone and appear in WhatsApp.

Important: This restores your entire iCloud contact list, not just one deleted contact. iCloud archives your current contacts before restoring an earlier version, allowing you to revert if needed.

Check Your iCloud Contact Sync Settings

If your contacts disappeared after switching iPhones, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud and make sure Contacts is enabled.

If your contacts were stored in Google instead, add your Google Account under Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts and enable contact syncing.

4. How to Recover a Deleted WhatsApp Number from an Old Chat

If you deleted a contact but still have a WhatsApp conversation with that person, you may be able to retrieve their phone number.

Step 1. Open the conversation and tap the name or phone number at the top.
Step 2. Check the phone number and select the option to add it to your contacts.
Step 3. Enter the contact’s name and save it.

If you see Sync contact to phone, enable it to save the number to your phone’s address book as well.

Find the Number in a WhatsApp Group

If you no longer have the individual conversation, open a WhatsApp group you share with that person and check the participant list.

If you find their profile and their phone number is visible, you can save it as a contact again.

5. How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Contacts Without a Backup

You don’t need a WhatsApp chat backup to recover contacts. As explained above, you may be able to restore them through Google Contacts or iCloud, or retrieve their numbers from existing WhatsApp conversations and groups.

If those methods don’t work, check whether the missing contacts are saved in another account, such as Outlook, on your previous phone, or on your SIM card.

If the number has been permanently deleted and you can’t find it in any account, device, or conversation, recovery may not be possible.

6. How to Restore WhatsApp Contacts After Switching Phones

If you lost your WhatsApp contacts after switching phones, make sure you’re signed in to the same Google Account (Android) or Apple Account (iPhone) and that contact syncing is enabled.

WhatsApp also lets you save contacts directly to your WhatsApp account. If you used this feature, those contacts may be restored automatically when you set up WhatsApp on your new device.

Keep in mind that contacts saved only to WhatsApp may not appear in your phone’s address book. To save them there as well, enable Sync contact to phone when adding a contact.

7. Does Restoring a WhatsApp Backup Recover Deleted Contacts?

Not usually. WhatsApp chat backups are primarily designed to restore messages and media, not contacts stored in your phone’s address book.

Those contacts should be recovered through Google Contacts, iCloud, or your WhatsApp account, depending on where they were saved.

For this reason, you shouldn’t uninstall WhatsApp just to recover missing contacts. Doing so could cause you to lose conversations if you don’t have an up-to-date backup.
